Camera

The Vivo X90 Pro's camera hardware and implementation are impressive. The 1-inch Sony IMX988 primary sensor is the star of the show, and it does not disappoint. The images produced by the camera are rich in color, detail, and dynamic range. The ZEISS Natural Color mode adds an extra touch of realism to the shots, and the OIS compensates for most of the shake.

The autofocus and tap-to-focus are instant, and the X90 Pro has the option to manually track fast-moving objects. The shutter speeds are fast enough to capture crisp shots in different lighting conditions. The V2 chip streamlines the X90 Pro's image-processing pipeline, enabling several enhancements like highlighting and detail representation in the shadows. The automatic HDR turns on effectively in situations where it is required to amplify a shot.

The X90 Pro offers features that are more geared towards photography enthusiasts, such as the Effects Master tab in the settings menu that allows for an easier change in color temperature levels with a swipe across the viewfinder. The Super Macro mode, enabled by the 12MP ultra-wide shooter, can turn on automatically as soon as you get close to a subject. The ultra-wide lens itself has a decent field-of-view and maintains color temperatures in close proximity to the main 1-inch camera.

Portrait mode impressed me the most, with the 50MP Sony IMX768 depth shooter capable of superlative background separation and edge detection. On human subjects, there appeared to be some facial retouching, but it does make for easier sharing on social media. Apart from that, there is the Pro mode and several customization options for correcting white balance, exposure, saturation, shutter speeds, and more. Images can be snapped in RAW and SuperRAW formats, ready for editing in Photoshop.

There's also Double Exposure, which puts a translucent overlay of some in-built presets or any photo you have clicked on the viewfinder. The feature is not a gimmick, as the final outputs can look quite impressive if you manage to get it right.

Low-light photography is a highlight of the X90 Pro, and the photos shot at night are soothing. The V2 chip again plays a vital part in how the final image is churned out. There's a good amount of detail in areas with more ambient lighting, and the manual exposure slider is a bonus.

Design and Display

The Vivo X90 Pro is a visually stunning device that exudes premiumness from every angle. The phone features a sleek and slim design, with a curved glass back that sits comfortably in the hand. The back of the device features a gradient finish that shimmers and shifts colors when light hits it at different angles. The phone is available in two colors - Midnight Black and Moonlight White.

The front of the device is dominated by a large 6.56-inch AMOLED display that curves at the edges. The display has a resolution of 2376 x 1080 pixels and a high refresh rate of 120Hz, making it one of the smoothest and most responsive displays on a smartphone. The colors on the display are vibrant and punchy, with deep blacks and bright whites. The display also supports HDR10+ content, making it a joy to watch movies and TV shows on.

The bezels around the display are minimal, and the phone features a punch-hole cutout for the front-facing camera. This allows for more screen real estate, and a more immersive viewing experience. The phone also features an in-display fingerprint scanner that is quick and accurate, and eliminates the need for a physical scanner on the back of the device.

Performance and software

The Vivo X90 Pro is a smartphone that focuses on providing an exceptional camera experience. The device comes with a 1-inch Sony IMX989 primary sensor that delivers detailed and richly colored images. The ZEISS Natural Color mode adds a touch of realism to the shots, and the OIS compensates for most of the shake.

The autofocus and tap-to-focus are instant, and the shutter speeds are fast enough to get crisp shots in a variety of lighting conditions. The phone's V2 chip streamlines its image-processing pipeline and enables several other enhancements. The Effects Master tab in the settings menu allows an easier change in color temperature levels with a swipe across the viewfinder. The Pro mode and several customization options are on offer to correct white balance, exposure, saturation, shutter speeds, and so on.

The X90 Pro also has Double Exposure, which puts a translucent overlay of some in-built presets or any photo you have clicked on the viewfinder. The low-light photography is excellent, and the Night mode and computational photography do an excellent job of getting better details in the shadows. Overall, the Vivo X90 Pro is a great option for photography enthusiasts who want a smartphone that delivers exceptional camera performance.

Battery

The battery life of a smartphone is a crucial factor to consider when making a purchase decision. After all, what good is a high-performance device with great cameras and a stunning display if it cannot last through a busy day? In the case of the Vivo X90 Pro, the device packs in a 4500mAh battery that promises to deliver all-day battery life.

During my usage, the Vivo X90 Pro easily lasted me a full day with moderate usage. This included browsing social media apps, streaming music and videos, and taking photos. I also ran a few benchmarks and played a few games, and the battery held up quite well. However, with heavy usage, you might need to plug in the phone by the end of the day.

Thankfully, the Vivo X90 Pro comes with support for 44W fast charging, which means you can juice up the device in no time. In my testing, the phone was able to go from 0% to 100% in around 50 minutes, which is impressive. Additionally, the device also supports wireless charging, but it is limited to 10W, which is not as fast as some of its competitors.

Another nifty feature of the Vivo X90 Pro is the reverse wireless charging capability, which allows you to charge other devices wirelessly using the phone. This can come in handy if you have other gadgets that support wireless charging, such as earbuds or smartwatches.

Final verdict

The Vivo X90 Pro is a flagship smartphone that excels in photography with its 1-inch Sony IMX988 primary sensor and cutting-edge computational features. Its camera setup produces detailed, colour-rich images with a high dynamic range and good stabilisation. The autofocus is instant, the shutter speeds are fast and the OIS compensates for most of the shake. It also includes features like Super Macro mode, Pro mode, RAW format, and double exposure. Low light photography is a highlight with its Night mode and the V2 chip plays a vital part in how the final image is produced. Overall, the Vivo X90 Pro is a top-performing smartphone with a sleek design, long-lasting battery, and a vivid display. The device is an absolute champ with its optical skills and would be a perfect choice for shutterbugs who want to push the boundaries of smartphone photography.
